The European Inventor Award in the category “Lifetime Achievement” goes to Prof. Karl Leo

eCAPITAL NEWS
Last week, the European Inventor Award went to Prof. Karl Leo. The European Patent Office named the physicist from TU Dresden the European Inventor of the Year 2021 in the “Lifetime Achievement” category.

He was honoured for his groundbreaking research on the further development of organic semiconductors.

These were not only the basis for numerous European patents, but also for some very successful companies founded by him, which have fundamentally changed the industry and led to innovative products in many areas. These include, among others, the portfolio companies of eCAPITAL AG Novaled and Heliatek.

Karl Leo has made the successes of companies like Novaled and Heliatek possible with his groundbreaking research and his unconditional will to find solutions. He understands how to put his research into practice in such a way that commercial applications are possible for the benefit of all. This already excited me when we met in 2005. I am delighted that he has been selected by the European Patent Office as European Inventor in the Lifetime Achievement category for his achievements and congratulate him very warmly on this outstanding award.

Dr. Paul-Josef Patt, CEO, eCAPITAL AG

I am delighted to receive this prestigious recognition and would like to thank my entire team who have supported me over the years and without whose cooperation this success would not have been possible. At the same time, the award is an incentive for me to continue with our fundamental work and hopefully bring many more innovative organic products from the lab to the market.

Prof. Dr. Karl Leo, TU Dresden

Prof. Dr. Karl Leo is director of the Institute for Applied Physics as well as the “Dresden Integrated Center for Applied Physics and Photonic Materials (IAPP)“ at TU Dresden. His special field is solid-state physics. Karl Leo enjoys the highest international recognition and his research has been awarded numerous prestigious prizes (including the Leibniz Prize of the DFG, the German Future Prize of the Federal President).
