Organic solar cells from Heliatek – comeback of the German solar industry

PORTFOLIO NEWS
By 2035, Germany will have to use only green electricity to meet all of its energy needs. This would necessitate the installation of solar panels on every roof, says subject matter expert Prof. Dr. Karl Leo of the Technical University of Dresden.

What seems simple is challenging to do since traditional solar modules, which are mostly made in China, have many issues. They are stiff, absorb light, use rare earths to make them, and create garbage for us.

The answer is silicon-free organic solar cells built of hydrocarbon molecules. These absorb light and release energy when bright light is present. They can also be used on window panes because to their flexibility and light transmission. A German manufacturer currently holds the position of global market leader for organic solar cells. The Dresden-based, portfolio firm of eCAPITAL AG, Heliatek GmbH, which was created in 2006 by Karl Leo and others, manufactures and currently markets organic solar cells throughout Europe and Asia.

Hannah Krolle outlines the possibilities for the German solar sector through Heliatek and other companies in her Handelsblatt article titled “Organic solar cells are on the verge of a breakthrough.” You can read the whole article here (only in German).
