“Cleantech Deal of the Year” – Cleantech Group recognizes the acquisition of sonnen by Shell New Energies

PORTFOLIO NEWS
Cleantech Group, based in San Francisco, has recognized the acquisition of sonnen by Shell New Energies in February 2019 as “Deal of the Year” in the European cleantech industry. The Cleantech Group publishes every year the Global Cleantech 100, a list of the industry’s most innovative and promising companies.

This year, 13,900 companies from 93 countries were nominated for the Global Cleantech 100 and judged by experts to be best positioned to solve the cleantech challenges of the future and significantly influence the market. One of the aims of the award is to recognize innovative and strong new alliances, which have the potential to significantly support the transition from the present towards a CO2-free and resource-efficient future. sonnen has already led this list in the past.

Cleantech Group is a global authority for clean and sustainable technologies. For us, this is a huge affirmation, as it rates the acquisition of sonnen by Shell as trend-setting for the whole industry. It shows that a young company like sonnen can make a difference in a short time and advance clean technology so much that it changes an entire industry.

Christoph Ostermann,
founder and CEO of sonnen

eCAPITAL saw the company’s potential already very early and was the first investor to fund sonnen at the beginning of 2013. Dr. Paul-Josef Patt, CEO of eCAPITAL, states: “We are very pleased that we were able to successfully support sonnen as lead investor on its journey from a small start-up in the Bavarian province to a global innovation leader. With its intelligent, decentralized approach, sonnen has changed the energy market fundamentally and now has found the right partner in Shell in order to further expand its worldwide leading position as a provider of electricity storage and energy services. That this is now being confirmed by Cleantech Group is a tremendous honor!”
