1KOMMA5° is developing the operating system for an intelligent power grid

PORTFOLIO NEWS
Flexible capacity from millions of decentralized energy assets could become a key building block for a more stable and efficient energy system.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (F.A.Z.) recently featured eCAPITAL portfolio company 1KOMMA5° and its vision for an intelligent power grid. In an interview with Susanne Preuß, founder and CEO Philipp Schröder explains why today’s power grids lack digital capacity management and how software can help bridge this gap.

At the heart of 1KOMMA5°’s approach is Heartbeat AI, its AI-powered energy platform. It connects solar PV systems, battery storage, heat pumps, and EV chargers to form a virtual power plant for residential customers. By intelligently coordinating energy generation and consumption over time, the platform can help mitigate peak loads, reduce the curtailment of renewable energy, and make more efficient use of existing grid infrastructure. Through partnerships with hardware manufacturers, the approach is set to scale beyond 1KOMMA5°’s own customer base, both across Europe and in the United States.

The article highlights the role of software and AI in connecting decentralized energy assets into a flexible, integrated system. In doing so, it touches on a central element of eCAPITAL’s investment thesis: supporting technologies that strengthen the resilience and performance of critical infrastructure.
